With over one hundred years of development, chiropractic is the third largest primary health care profession in the world after conventional medicine and dentistry.

Chiropractic (treatment procedures) has been practiced as far back as 2700BC by Chinese physicians.

Hippocrates (the founder of medicine), said: “in disease always look to the spine first”.

1972
The US Congress voted to make chiropractic available under Medicare. Today in America, there are around 50,000 practicing chiropractors treating 15-20 million patients. One in 15 Americans sees a chiropractor at least once a year.

1990
A clinical trial carried out by the British Government (the Medical Research Council) found chiropractic to be more effective than hospital outpatient treatment for lower back pain.

1995
A follow up clinical trial to the 1990 trial carried out by the British Government (the Medical Research Council) confirmed that chiropractic was more effective than hospital outpatient treatment for lower back pain.

1994
The Chiropractic Act was given Royal Assent.

A report by the Clinical Standards Advisory Group (an independent multidisciplinary group commissioned by the department of health) recommended that GP’s should send appropriate patients with lower back pain for manipulation, as carried out by chiropractors, as this is an effective form of treatment for mechanical back pain. It suggested that early active treatment rather than rest reduced long term disability.

Virtually all health insurance companies recognise chiropractic and will pay for treatment with registered chiropractors.
